New Website

Hi everyone! The new website is almost ready to go live, and should be up within a few days.

After switching to the new host, a read-only copy of the current website will be made accessible as an archive of past posts. This is being done because user accounts will not be migrated to the new site (you will have to register again) and forum posts will not be migrated to the new site. (although it may become possible to migrate individual threads over where necessary -- any currently active threads will be migrated over if possible)

After the migration, I will post some more information. If you have any questions about the new site or the migration, please send me a message.

2010-07-09 5:30 pm

In the spirit of summer, the ARC will be holding a Japanese-inspired festival on the 9th of July in the Atrium at SFU. Come and enjoy traditional festival games, vendor foods, and the chance to win in our raffles! Bring your old animu merchandise to sell at our flea market tables and come in yukata to take part in our costume contest.

Note: The party will start at 5:30pm. If you want to sell anything at the flea market, please either let us know in advance try to arrive early. Books, DVDs, and figurines are the best things to bring, but we'll allow other items as well. However, please note that BOOTLEGS ARE NOT ALLOWED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

Also, we'll be holding a raffle to determine who SMASHES A WATERMELON. You aren't going to want to miss that!

Important Info for Summer 2010

Welcome, newbies, to the Altered Reality Club! If possible, please join our Facebook group to keep up with our weekly club events.

Gaming Night takes place every Tuesday night in the Rotunda. We say it's at 4:30pm, but you can show up pretty much anytime and find people with their cards and dice out.

Our First General Meeting will be on Thursday, May 27 at 4:00pm in the Rotunda, which you can read more about here. This will be followed by our first weekly anime screening for the semester, which will be the highly anticipated movie Evangelion 2.22: You Can (Not) Advance.
Anime screenings will take place Thursdays at 4:30pm in AQ 3005 in every following week. Some of the programs we'll be showing to start are Paranoia Agent, Baccano!, Read or Die, and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. We'll also be showing some other off-kilter stuff later on like Bakshi and Frazetta's Fire and Ice, so stay up to date!

Bowling Night

2010-02-04 8:30 pm

On Thursday night, we will be going BOWLING after weeklies! Lanes are booked at Revs Bowling Centre (which is right off of Holdom SkyTrain Station) for 8:30pm. Price $4.50 for each game (shoes are extra). Because this is a group booking, it has to be handled in one payment, meaning you can't use debit or credit. Please bring CASH if you wish to attend.

Please also note that before we head out bowling, we will be screening all six episodes of the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" BBC series at weeklies! If you haven't seen this series, I strongly recommend swinging by AQ3005 before hand and checking it out.

"Whisper of the Heart" and Gelato this Thursday!

Please attend our Anime Weeklies this Thursday at 4:30pm in AQ 3005! In addition to premiering our regular series' for the semester (Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, Trapeze, and Haibane Renmei), we'll also be screening the classic Studio Ghibli film "Whisper of the Heart"! It's a fantastic movie, so be sure not to miss out!

After weeklies we will be heading down to Cumpari's Gelato near Lougheed Station for special deserts. If you want to get there yourself, it can be found at 535 North Road in Coquitlam. However, I strongly recommend attending weeklies so we can all head out there as a group. It's easier and a lot more fun that way!

First General Meeting for Spring 2010

2010-01-14 4:00 pm

The Altered Reality Club's first General Meeting for Spring 2010 will take place on Thursday, January 14 at 4:00pm in the Rotunda! (If you don't know where that is, the Rotunda is the large, round room right above the stairs leading down to the lower bus loop. Just look for our giant board!) We'll be discussing plans for events and activities this semester, and we need YOUR input on how to make this club work best for everyone.

There are also some vacant executive positions and members will also be able to challenge existing positions if they so choose. If you're eyeing an executive position in the club or want to defend your current position, please make sure you attend!

The first general meeting will be followed by the first of our Anime Weeklies for the semester (in AQ3149), consisting of episodes 1-5 of Cowboy Bebop. Come along with us after for a delicious dessert at Cumpari's near Lougheed Sky Train Station. More details to be posted soon!

Snowed-in the Rotunda Overnight Christmas Bash

2009-12-18 6:00 pm

(Disclaimer: We're hoping that doesn't actually happen)

What better way to shed off the horrible stress of these last few hectic weeks of school by locking yourself in the university for the night? That's what the ARC will be doing on December 18. No, we're not crazy. We're FESTIVE!

Our Christmas celebration for the year will begin at 12pm at Top Gun Sushi near New Westminster Skytrain station, where we will be indulging in an all-you-can-eat lunch at discount DAYTIME prices, plus an additional 10% off! (Note, everything in this paragraph is subject to change)

The celebration will continue at 6pm where it will extend into an overnight party in the Rotunda. Please note that while we'll have some games running as usual, the club will not be providing any food! While we may make some coffee runs (depending on the weather), please be sure to pack along enough food and entertainment to last you through the night if you're planning to stick around. Don't worry if you aren't, though. All of the major events will happen before midnight!

And what are the major events, you ask? As usual we'll be playing Werewolves, but what I'm hoping will stand out more is our annual game of Cutthroat Christmas! Here's how it works: we sit in a circle around the presents. The first person opens a gift. The second person either opens a new gift, or steals the gift the previous person opened, leaving that person to open a new gift. The cycle of unwrapping and stealing continues until there are no presents left to open.

We encourage you all to bring gifts and participate. However, please note the rules:

1) NO FOOD, WEAPONS, OR ANYTHING POTENTIALLY HARMFUL
2) Please ensure that it's something anime/game/nerd related. The game is a lot more fun when your gift is something worth fighting over
3) Please keep the cost of your gift under $20. As Jevon always notes: "If you don't prepare to be disappointed as most people in the club are struggling college students with no money." We'd like to avoid situations of people who bought expensive presents getting screwed over.

As usual, cosplay is encouraged!

Christmas Specials + Cosplay Dinner at BP

2009-12-03 4:00 pm

For our final weekly showing of the semester, we will be presenting all of you three carefully handpicked classics which prominently represent the most quintessential values of holiday cheer:

- Invader Zim: The Most Horrible X-Mas Ever
- He-Man and She-Ra: A Christmas Special
- Santa's Slay (starring Bill Goldberg as Santa Claus/The Antichrist)

Also being screened: Chris Christmas Rodriguez and the only parts of "Silent Night, Deadly Night 2" actually worth watching.

Afterwards, we'll be heading down to Boston Pizza for a very special dinner... special in the sense that we'll be encouraging club members to COSPLAY! Now please note that this is COMPLETELY OPTIONAL, but half the fun of crashing the joint will be doing so in garrish anime character costumes. If you have a costume to bring, please bring it!

We'll be going to the Boston Pizza near Gilmore Skytrain Station. See you all there!

Final General Meeting for Autumn 2009

2009-12-02 4:00 pm

Our final meeting will take place this Wednesday, December 2 at 4:00pm in the Rotunda.

At the meeting, we will be discussing plans for the Christmas Party, as well as details for next semester such as Clubs Days, Icebreakers, and assembling a committee to help plan the Art Auction. We'll also be talking about executive positions for next semester, so if you're interested, please be sure to attend!
