That description fits Bokurano...they kill off a character almost every time a mech fight ensues.

Higurashi's disturbing factor was more psychological than visual, you basically watch the characters' mental states begin to deteriorate as each story arc goes on.

Although it resets every 4 eps or so, which I found kind of cheapens the whole factor of OH GOD WTF!

Come to think of it, I just remembered there was another anime where the main character dies a lot...Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan

The main guy gets gibbed by this angel girl's spiked bat. Multiple times. He gets better soon afterward. It's more comedic than disturbing.

Oh right, there's also Mnemosyne! The main character dies in every episode there (in fact she dies right at the beginning of the first ep). Contains some rather disturbing scenes in later eps, though then again the death in ep 1 is already disturbing enough.
